Cutliffe played football, basketball and baseball at MMA after turning down a basketball scholarship to attend Harvard.  With the exception of freshman baseball he was a starter in every game he played for the Mariners.  During his senior year he was elected captain of both the football and basketball teams.  In football he played quarterback, defense, place kicked, punted, and returned kick-offs and punts.  In his freshman year of basketball the Mariners scrimmaged the Boston Celtics who at that time held their training camp in Ellsworth.  He was assigned to guard Bob Cousy and matched Cousy’s 17-point output.  That team also beat the University of Maine varsity by 20 points in a scrimmage.  In baseball he was a starting pitcher with a winning record and played second base when not pitching.
