Wiggin was the athletic director and football coach from 1959-65.  Mariner football teams compiled a 32-10-2 record in his tenure, the best won-loss record in the state during that time.  Wiggin was responsible for elevating the MMA schedule from freshman and prep school teams to a full-fledged schedule of four-year college and service teams.  Highlights of his career include a win over Kings Point in 1964, having two players players selected to the Maine College All-State football team (a first for MMA), and being ranked fifth in New England Division in 1964.  He was instrumental in creating a league that also included Curry College, Bridgewater State, Nichols College, and Massachusetts Maritime.  In a 19 year coaching career he had only one losing season and a record of 108-40-4.
