Butterfield Guides Mariners to Fifth Place Finish at Maine State Championship

BANGOR, Maine – Senior Benjamin Butterfield (Phillips, Maine) finished in the top-20 to help lead Maine Maritime Academy men's cross country to a fifth-place finish at the Maine State Cross Country Championships, hosted by Husson University, on Saturday.

How it Happened: Butterfield led the Mariners and all Maine North Atlantic Conference (NAC) runners, finishing 18th in the 115-runner field on the 8k course, with a time of 26:20.8. Senior John Hassett (Castine, Maine) put together a top-40 finish, placing 37th, with a time of 27:02.8.

Sophomore Ponce Saltysiak (Bar Harbor, Maine) finished 48th, with a time of 27:20.9, first-year Cooper Parlee (Brewer, Maine) finished 63rd, with a time of 28:12.3, and senior William Procko (Branford, Fla.) rounded out the Mariners' top five finishers, placing 68th, with a time of 28:20.1.

Inside the Numbers: Bates College claimed the top spot with a team score of 24 and a total time of 2:05:22, Colby College finished second with a team score of 36 and a total time of 2:06:35, and Bowdoin College finished third overall with a team score of 81 and a total time of 2:10:43. Colby's Tyler Morris crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 24:15.3. The Mariners placed fifth out of 11 teams with a score of 157 and total time of 2:17:16.

Up Next: Maine Maritime Academy returns to action on Saturday, October 15 when they travel to Springfield, Mass. to compete in the Western New England Invitational at 11:00am.
