Mariners Move Closer to Championship

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Sitting in first place at the start of Saturday's competition, Maine Maritime Academy continued to rely on depth to drive points at the Metropolitan / North Atlantic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships to maintain the lead. The Mariners hold a 60-point lead heading into the final day of competition.

Maine Maritime rolled up second, third, fifth and 14th place points in the 400-yard individual medley to surge in the team standings. Ponce Saltysiak placed second in 4:28.20, touching after Baruch's Dani Vasilkoff who posted a 4:21.55. Lincoln Graf followed Saltysiak to the wall 4.27 seconds later. Aidan Burke touched fifth in the A Final at 4:41.78. Josh Been swam a 5:05.32 in the B Final for 14th place.

The Mariners surged again in the scoring in the 100-yard backstroke with six swimmers finishing in the points. John Driscoll, Graf and Nicholas Been went to the wall in fifth, sixth and seventh places. Brennden Dion and Fox Fernald took 10th and 11th, while Oscar Gonzales took 16th.

The Mariners started and ended the second day of swimming with second place finishes in relays. The 200-yard medley relay team of John Markillie, Burke, Carson Trout and Driscoll placed second with a time of 1:38.23. They were beat to the wall by Baruch at 1:37.51. Baruch grabbed first place points in the 800-yard freestyle relay swimming to a 6:59.17. The Mariners team of Aidan Walls, Saltysiak, Ryan Maher, and Jay Creegan touched at 7:32.61.

Trout put up a silver-medal effort in the tightly contested 100-yard butterfly. Baruch's Rami Fayngersh knifed his way to the wall in 52.12, .03 second ahead of Trout. Markille added fifth place points in the race, while Maher touched 13th overall. Nicholas Been scored 18th place.

Walls posted a 1:50.07 for fourth place in the 200-yard freestyle, while Creegan placed eighth at 1:56.45. John Gilpin finished 11th in 1:57.61.

Burke, Griffin Erb and Kyle Smit finished 6th, 10th and 18th in the men's 100-yard breaststroke. Burke swam a 1:01.42. Fayngersh set the gold standard at 57.11.

Oliver Cox placed fourth in the men's 1-meter diving.

The Mariners will look to take the wire-to-wire championship win on the third and final day of competition on Sunday.
