BANGOR, Maine — The Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer team overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat No. 2 seed Husson University, 3-2, on the road Saturday and advance to the North Atlantic Conference Championship.
Husson (11-5-2) struck early, scoring just 41 seconds into the match to take a 1-0 lead and adding another goal in the 12th minute to make it 2-0. The Eagles appeared in full control and on their way to next weekend's conference final, but Maine Maritime (12-6-1) shifted momentum midway through the first half.
The Mariners earned a corner kick and played it short to junior
Sophia Hernandez, who found sophomore
Hadley Stoddard open just inside the 18-yard box. Stoddard lifted a shot over the Eagles goalkeeper to cut the deficit to 2-1.
MMA held Husson scoreless the rest of the half and came out energized after the break. Senior
Delaney Ennis tied the match in the 60th minute off an assist from freshman
Tarin Barrett, and just two minutes later, Stoddard tallied her 20th goal of the season—finishing a feed from sophomore
Isabella Da Silva—to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead.
Following Stoddard's eventual game-winner, Maine Maritime adjusted its formation and kept the Eagles in check, controlling the final 28 minutes to secure the upset and a spot in the NAC Championship for the second time in the last three seasons.
Husson held a 16-6 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in shots on goal, but MMA capitalized on its chances, converting three of its four shots on frame. Junior
Isa Thesing recorded three saves in net, while Stoddard led the Mariners with four shots, including three on goal.
Maine Maritime will now compete for the NAC title on Saturday, taking on top-seeded Lesley University on the road.
