Mariners Finish Third at Metro Champs

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Maine Maritime Academy finished in third place among at the Metropolitan Conference / North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Swimming & Diving Championships. The Mariners held second place at the end of the day both Friday and Saturday, with NAC-rival Husson close in tow. The Eagles jumped up into the second spot on Sunday, finishing behind Division II Felician University.

"I am so proud of the effort this team put in this weekend," said Maine Maritime Head Coach, Tony DeMuro. "We entered this meet seeded sixth and finished in third. They fought Husson hard for second place and provided a gritty performance that they and the entire Maine Maritime community can be proud of."

Natasha Kopeck placed second in the one-meter diving competition scoring a 387.30, while Emma Brondum scored 309.95 for fifth place. Roberts Wesleyan's Emma Dicob won the event with a 468.85. Husson pulled in third, fourth and sixth-place points from the board setting a tone of utilizing depth to overtake MMA in the standings.

Kylie Cantlon placed seventh in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 20:27.93 to start the final day of competition. Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) first-year Meghan Wurster touched the wall first in 18:24.72.

Liza Zhukov placed second in the B final of the 200-yard backstroke and 10th overall. She touched .22 seconds behind Husson's Mia Winslow.

Rayelle Brewer contributed seventh place points in the 100-yard freestyle.

Maine Maritime got 10th, 12th and 19th place finishes from Sage Dentremont, Ava Snyder, and McKenzie Murray in the 200-yard breaststroke. Husson grabbed 9th, 17th and 19th place points in the race.

Claire MacDonald placed eighth in the 200-yard butterfly. She was followed to the wall by Meadow Hughes in ninth. Husson's Kayla Payson placed fourth and the Eagles took 12th place points as well.

Husson took fifth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Mariners entry of Brewer, Zhukov, Cantlon, and Kopeck placed eighth.

The NAC Championship will be broken out of the Metropolitan Results in a manual rescoring on Monday. MarinerSports.org will recap the full weekend's worth of awards and final NAC standings on Monday.
