Men's Soccer Advances to NAC East Semifinals Against Host Thomas College

The No. 2 Mariners defeated third-seeded UMaine-Farmington, 3-1

WATERVILLE, Maine--No. 2 seed Maine Maritime Academy scored two second-half goals to repel third-seeded UMaine-Farmington, 3-1, on Saturday in the 2024 North Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer East Division Quarterfinals at Smith Field on the campus of Thomas College. The Mariners (8-7-2 overall) advance to tomorrow's NAC East Semifinals against the host Terriers, while the Beavers see their campaign end at 7-7-3.

MMA Highlights
  • Junior tri-captain John-John Dickenson led all scorers with three points on a goal and an assist. He led all attackers with three shots on goal.
  • Classmate and tri-captain Ronnie Morgan and sophomore James Baur notched an assist each.
  • Sophomore goalie Reagan Moynihan made six saves.
UMF Highlights
  • Abdilahi Abdi had a goal and William Dowse an assist. The former also tied Dickenson with a game-high five shots.
How It Happened
  • In the 59th minute, Dickenson broke a 1-1 tie with a diving header from inside the 6-yard box off a pass from Morgan.
  • The Beavers' Jack Luciano had a golden opportunity to knot the score 2-2 in the 84th minute, but his shot bounced off the crossbar.
  • Sophomore Gabriel Toledo then added an insurance goal with his MMA-leading sixth from the penalty spot in the 89th minute.
  • Freshman defender Garrison Fisher made his first collegiate goal a memorable one that gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute, when he looped a long-range shot from the right wing over the goalkeeper's head into the net.
  • Abdi tied it 1-all in the 54th minute on a thru-ball by Dowse and he got behind the MMA defense.
  • UMF had the edge in shots (15-11) and shots on goal (7-6), but MMA led in corner kicks (5-3).
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Dickenson tied sophomore Dillon Wilkinson for the team lead with five assists and tops the Mariners with 15 total points.
  • Maine Maritime wins the season series from UMF, 2-1, and avenges a 3-1 loss to the Beavers in the 2023 conference quarterfinals.
  • The Mariners are now 7-2-1 when scoring the first goal this season.
  • With a win Sunday, Maine Maritime would reach the Finals for the first time in five seasons.
