Mariners Wrap Up Historic Season In NCAA First Round

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime men's lacrosse fell to Emmanuel College (Ma.) 12-7 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
How it Happened: The Saints got on the board first when they scored back-to-back goals in the first five minutes of play. Soon after, Jacob Hintermaier (Macon, Ga.) found the back of the net off a pass from Alex Stevens (South Portland, Maine) to bring the score to 2-1. The Saints then controlled the rest of the first half, scoring seven unanswered goals to extended their lead to 9-1 going into halftime.
 
The Mariners came out strong in the second half with back-to-back goals from Brendan Reddington (Wallingford, Conn.) and Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine). Emmanuel then scored a goal from Ryan Castle before the Mariners scored another two goals from Sam Nichol (Concord, N.H.) and Wilson. The Saints ended the third period with a goal to make the score 11-5. Wilson was able to get two more goals past the Saints in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late and the Saints claimed a 12-7 victory.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Maine Maritime was led by Wilson who recorded four goals and one assist to go along with two ground balls.
  • Hintermaier, Reddington, and Nichol each scored one goal for the Mariners.
  • The Saints were led by Ryan Castle who tallied three goals and two assists, along with five ground balls and one caused turnover.
  • Colin Dickinson and Robert Favuzza each added two goals to the mix for the Saints.
  • Garrett Ruszkowski (Saugus, Mass.) recorded 21 saves in net for the Mariners, while Randy Castle tallied 16 saves for the Saints.
  • The Saints held a 64-32 advantage in shots and a 50-36 edge in ground balls over the Mariners.
 
Notables:
  • This was the first NCAA Tournament Game hosted by Mariners Athletics.
