Mariners Beat Huskies in Season Opener

GORHAM, Maine – Maine Maritime men's lacrosse beat the University of Southern Maine in their season opener on Sunday afternoon.
 
How it Happened: Jacob Belanger (Brunswick, Maine) opened up the scoring for the Mariners as they jumped to a 3-0 lead against the Huskies. The University of Southern Maine answered with three goals of their own to tie the game.
 
The two teams then went back-and-forth before Sam Nichol (Concord, N.H.) sparked a five goal run to make the score 12-7. The Huskies only scored two more goals in the game as the Mariners poured in six more goals in the fourth quarter to claim a 19-9 victory to open up the season.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Jacob Hintermaier (Macon, Georgia) set an impressive career-high with five goals, along with one assist, one ground ball, and one caused turnover.
  • Nichol tallied four goals, five ground balls, one assist, and one caused turnover.
  • Trey Marcil (Gansevoort, N.Y.) added three goals, two ground balls, one assist, and one caused turnover.
  • Jayden Wilson (Lewiston, Maine) and Belanger each added two goals, and Brendan Reddington (Wallingford, Conn.), Evan Golembeske (New Milford, Conn.), and Noah Caramihalis (York, Maine) each chipped in one goal.
  • Zach McCarthy (Malvern, Pa.) tallied eight saves in 60 minutes, while Addison Dietz recorded 14 and Nathan Plourde tallied five for the Huskies.
  • Jed Astbury went 20 for 31 from the face off.
  • Maine Maritime held a 69-34 advantage in shots and a 41-27 advantage in ground balls.
 
Up Next: Maine Maritime improves to 1-0, while the Huskies fall to 0-1. The Mariners return to action on Saturday, March 4 at 12:00pm in their home opener against the University of New England.
