Melampy Records Double-Double in Win Over Bengals

 
CASTINE, Maine – After beating UMaine-Fort Kent 3-2 a week ago, Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) records a double-double to lead the Mariners to a 3-0 over the Bengals in their home opener in Smith Gym to kick off Maine Maritime's homecoming.
 
How it Happened: In an exciting three-set match, the Mariners and Bengals competed back and forth, with the Mariners coming out on top in three straight sets. In the first set, the two teams were knotted at 20, before the Mariners went on a late four-point run, eventually winning the set. In the second set, the Bengals went on a five-point run to take the lead, 17-15. After more back-and-forth action, the Mariners went on a five-point run of their own to make the score 23-22. The Bengals scored one more point before Maine Maritime put the set away with an ace from Sydney Rich (Williamsburg, Va.). The last set was more of the same action, before Melamy and Katie Albritton (Hutto, Texas) connected on five straight points to win the match 3-0.
 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Melampy hit a game-high 17 kills, along with 16 digs and one ace.
  • Albritton dished out a game-high 31 assists, seven digs, three kills, one ace, and one block assist.
  • Hunnie Zuber-Stephens (Lubbock, Texas) tallied a game-high 20 digs, in addition to three assists and two kills.
  • Chloe Weeks (Farmington, N.H.) added eight kills on the night
  • Rich had 11 digs, while Riley Sullivan (Wilmington, Del.) recorded 10.
  • Three Bengals had five kills on the night.
  • Kennedy Miller tallied eight assists for UMaine-Fort Kent.
 
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 8-0 overall and the Bengals fall to 2-4 on the year. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, September 20 at 6:30pm against Colby College in a non-conference matchup.
