Mariners Lose in Overtime Against Wildcats to Finish Regular Season Play

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime women's lacrosse fell to Cazenovia College, 19-18 in a double-overtime North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened: Cazenovia College started off the game with two quick goals to make the score 2-0, before Hazel Stoddard (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) scored her first goal of the night to put the Mariners on the board. The Wildcats scored again, before Stoddard and Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) both scored man-up goals to tie the game up at 3-3. The Wildcats answered quickly with back-to-back goals, as Amber Card (Bowdoin, Maine) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Wildcats. Cazenovia then scored two more goals, as Lily Cook (Southwest Harbor, Maine) score another man-up goal. Stoddard ended the first quarter scoring back-to-back goals to tie the game up once again at 7-7. Cazenovia scored the first goal in the second quarter before Maine Maritime started to heat up, scoring four consecutive goals, from Emma White (New Sharon, Maine), Stoddard, Olivia Harriman (Orrington, Maine), and Labbe, to end the first half with a score of 11-8 in favor of the Mariners.

Maine Maritime started the second half off strong, scoring three straight goals from Stoddard, Labbe, and Cook to extend their lead to six, before the Wildcats scored four unanswered goals to cut the Mariners lead to two. Card and Stoddard quickly answered with unassisted goals before Cazenovia ended the third quarter with a goal to make the score 16-13 with the Mariners still in the lead. The Mariners got into early trouble with multiple players receiving yellow cards, allowing the Wildcats to score five straight goals, including two man-up goals, to take the lead back with a score of 18-16. Stoddard then scored two goals with under four minutes left in the game to tie the score up and send the game into a sudden death overtime.

The first overtime period, neither team scored, sending the game into a second one. The Wildcats won the draw control at the start of the second overtime period and scored with 2:29 left on the clock, claiming a 19-18 win.

Inside the Numbers: Stoddard led the Mariners with nine goals and two assists, for a total of 11 points, along with seven draw controls, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Labbe added three goals, tied the game-high six ground balls, five draw controls, and one caused turnover. Card and Cook each added two goals to the mix. Olivia Alejandro (Houston, Texas) caused a team-high four turnovers, while Card, White, and Kirra Magaña (Miami, Fla.) each chipped in three.

Angela Nuzzo led the Wildcats with six goals and three assists, while Sydney Allan added six goals and one assist, along with nine draw controls, four ground balls, and one caused turnover. Callie Andolina tied the game-high six ground balls and held the game-high five caused turnovers.

Charlotte Rose (Newark, Del.) tallied eight saves for the Mariners, while Amanda Drazek recorded 15 for the Wildcats.

The Mariners held a 42-34 advantage in shots and a 34-22 advantage in ground balls over the Wildcats.

Up Next: The Mariners finish the regular season at 7-7 overall and 5-2 in conference, while the Wildcats finish 7-5 overall and 5-1 in conference. Maine Maritime will return to action next weekend for the NAC Championship. Time and place is to be determined.
