BRUNSWICK, Maine – Maine Maritime women's basketball took #7 Smith College to overtime as they fall, 60-66 in the first match of the Coastal Maine Classic hosted by Bowdoin College.
 
How it Happened: After some back-and-forth action in the first quarter, Smith took a seven point lead against the Mariners with under a minute to go. Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) and Kali Barber (Tampa, Fla.) hit back-to-back jumpers to put the Mariners down by three. The Pioneers brought the lead back up to seven before the Mariners took a five point going into halftime.
 
The Mariners held onto their lead in the third quarter, going up by seven points. That lead got extended to ten points at one point in the fourth quarter before the Pioneers started chipping away at it. Smith tied the game up at the four-minute mark and the two teams went back-and-forth for the rest of the game. Smith hit two foul shots with 30 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Pioneers dominated overtime, outscoring the Mariners 9-3 to claim a 66-60 point victory.
 
Inside the Numbers:

• Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) and Maria Barela (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Mariners with 11 points each.
• Plissey added eight points, three rebounds, and two assists.
• Morgan Morrison had a game-high 18 points, while Amelia Clairmont had 14 and Katelyn Pickunka had 13 for the Pioneers.
• Pickunka also pulled down 11 rebounds.
• The Mariners shot 42.1% from the hardwood and 30.8% from beyond the arc, while the Pioneers shot 32.4% from the floor and 23.5% from three point land.

 
Up Next: The Mariners fall to 2-1 overall, while Smith College moves to 3-0. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow at 2:00pm when they take on Framingham State for the final matchup of the Coastal Maine Classic.
