Moravian Edges Maine Maritime

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball fell to Moravian College 62-61 on Saturday evening in non-conference action as part of the Tyler Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Smith College.

How it Happened: The Mariners took a 17-14 lead into the second quarter, but the Greyhounds held the Mariners to just 23.5 percent shooting and eight points in the second quarter to take a 32-25 lead into intermission.

Maine Maritime orchestrated a 13-2 run to start the third quarter and jumped out to a 38-34 lead with 3:26 to go in the quarter. The Mariners hung onto the lead until the Greyhounds closed the gap and claimed the lead with 2:27 remaining in the game.

Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) made a layup to tie things at 59-59 with just under two minutes to go. The two teams exchanged baskets and entered the final 29 seconds deadlocked at 61-61. The Greyhounds hit a shot with 17 seconds remaining to take a 62-61 advantage and held the Mariners for the victory.

Inside the Numbers: Maureen Stanton (Abington, Mass.) led the Mariners with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Plissey ended the evening with 12 points, six rebounds, a steal and a block and Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) rounded out the Mariners in double-figures with 10 points, four rebounds and two assists. Claire Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, and also contributed eight points.

Nadine Ewald led the Greyhounds with a double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds and also added a steal and a block, teammate Maddie Capuano recorded 19 points and three rebounds and Kayla Yoegel added 11 points, a rebound, an assist and a steal.

The Mariners shot 40.4 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc, while the Greyhounds shot 38.6 percent overall and 33.3 percent from three-point land. Moravian held a narrow 35-33 edge in rebounds.

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-3 on the season, while the Greyhounds improve to 2-0 overall. Maine Maritime will face Rivier College at 2:00 pm tomorrow in the consolation game of the Tyler Tip-Off Tournament at Smith College.
