Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. -- With Maine Maritime trailing by two, Kari Jones drained a three with 15 seconds on the clock to help lift the Mariners to a 54-52 win over New England College in a North Atlantic Conference women's basketball game Saturday. Maine Maritime snapped a three-game skid and won its eighth contest in 11 games, to improve to 12-9 overall, 9-5 NAC. The Pilgrims dropped to 11-10, 7-7.
Ashley Shine led the Mariners with 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Jones added 11 points. Leah Jackson added 12 points and pulled down four rebounds. Jackson is eight boards shy of reaching 900 in her career.
Taylor Burgess paced NEC with a game-high 15 points and Kayla Lawlor added 10 for the Pilgrims.
After Shine evened the game at 50-50 on a three with 3:18 left in the game, Katarina Muska put NEC up by two with a layup with 30 seconds left in the game. After a MMA timeout, Jones took the inbound pass and connected from long distance to give the Mariners the lead. Jackson later hit 1 of 2 from the line with six seconds left.
Maine Maritime overcame a 47-38 deficit with 8:01 left in the game with a 13-2 scoring run that was capped by eight-straight points by Shine, including her three to tie the game at 50.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half with the Mariners holding a 7-4 advantage midway through the opener. Maine Maritime took its largest lead, 17-6, on a Jones three with 6:54 before halftime. NEC chipped away at the Mariners lead and with an 11-3 run, including the last four points in the half, to make it 20-17 at the break.
The Mariners capitalized on 20 NEC turnovers and turned the mistakes into 20 points. Maine Maritime picked up 19 offensive rebounds which led to seven second chance points.
The Mariners return to action Friday, 5:30 p.m., hosting Johnson State.
