Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College men's basketball grabbed their first win of the season with an 89-82 win over Maine Maritime in a North Atlantic Conference men's basketball game Saturday. The Pilgrims improved to 1-11 overall, 1-5 NAC while the Mariners fell to 3-7, 2-3.
Paul Campbell led all scorers with 25 points for Maine Maritime and Andy Ball finished with a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Logan Poirier scored 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
Leading the way for NEC was the combination of Ryan Schmitz and Abdiraham Mohamed who each finished with 22 points. Jonathan Byrnes finished with a team-high nine rebounds to go along with 11 points and seven assists while Jaskin Melendez chipped in nine points for the Pilgrims.
NEC opened the game with an early 11-4 lead and continued to build on that lead, by grabbing its largest lead of the opening half up 38-22 with just over three minutes remaining on the clock. Maine Maritime battled back late in the half to close the gap to 46-34 at halftime.
The Pilgrims went up 20 just minutes into the second but the Mariners clawed their way back by shooting over 51% from the field to trail just six points with 6:41 remaining in regulation. A layup by Campbell with 38 seconds left put Maine Maritime within five but the Pilgrims closed out the final seconds 4-for-6 from the foul line to seal the win.
Maine Maritime returns to the court Tuesday at Maine-Farmington.
