Pilgrims Knock Off Mariners

HENNIKER, N.H. – New England College stayed unbeaten in the North Atlantic Conference with a 67-40 win over Maine Maritime Saturday. The Pilgrims improved to 10-2 overall, 6-0 NAC while the Mariners dropped to 3-6, 2-3.

Maine Maritime was led by Hanna Lyons who finished with a team-high 11 points and Mary Badeen chipped in 10 points. Leah Jackson led all rebounders pulling down 11.

Leading the way for NEC was Stephanie Parker who led all scorers finishing with 18 point on 6-of-7 shooting, including five three-pointer. Kate Levy chipped in 11 points and Markey Flewelling finished with 10 points for the Pilgrims.

The two teams battled through a low scoring opening minutes before Maine Maritime grabbed its first lead of the half going up 9-8 on a three-pointer from Casey Everest. The Pilgrims responded with a 15-1 run building their lead to 23-10. Maine Maritime hit back-to-back three-pointers slicing the lead to 23-16 but again the Pilgrims responded by closing out the half outscoring Maine Maritime 9-2 in the final minutes to head into halftime up 32-18.

NEC controlled much of the offensive tempo in the second half by outshooting Maine Maritime 40%-22%.

The Mariners return to action Tuesday in a non-conference game against Maine-Farmington.
