WATERVILLE, Maine – Running behind Vijay Kataria (Grassy Creek, N.C.) and Cameron Roy (Orrington, Maine), Maine Maritime Academy's cross country team picked up a second place finish in the five-team field at the Colby College Invitational on Saturday. The result marked the second time in three races that the Mariners have secured a second place finish.
Kataria ran the five-mile course in 31:30.91 for a 13th place finish in the field of 62. An individual entrant, Jeff Tucker, won the race in 29:39.86. Four consecutive Colby runners followed Tucker across the line, leading the charge to the championship at the Mules' event.
Roy crossed 2.82 seconds after Kataria finished. Roy had four runners in tow, followed by his teammates, Wyatt LaPage (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Evan Vashon (Waterville, Maine). LaPage logged a 32:09.22 for 19th place, while Vashon crossed 10.23 seconds later for 20th. Noel Deserres-Gauthier (Dover, N.H.) gave the Mariners a fifth runner in the top 25, taking 25th place in 32:47.47.
Maine Maritime is idle next weekend. The Mariners return to the circuit in two weeks, running in the State of Maine Championships.
