Spartans Hold Off Late Rally By MMA, Lady Mariners Season Comes To A Close

Bangor, ME – Castleton earned a trip to the North Atlantic Conference women's basketball championship, defeating Maine Maritime 51-46. Losing by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Mariners brought the score to within four points, but it was not enough to top the Spartans down the stretch in the last semifinal game of the day from the Newman Gymnasium at Husson University.

 

The NAC Rookie of the Year, Alyssa Leonard (Amherst, MA), led all scorers with 12 points and also racked up 8 rebounds and 5 assists on the night. Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, VT) added 11 points, while Christine Jaques (Burlington, VT) contributed 9 to the cause. Leah Jackson (Dedham, ME) picked up a double-double in the loss, scoring 10 points and bringing down 14 rebounds. Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) and Katie Pushard (Winthrop, ME) scored 9 and 8 points respectively.

 

In the first half Castleton shot 48.1% from the field compared to just 28.6% by the Mariners, but despite the disparity in shooting percentage, the Spartans led  by just 29-21 at the break. Maine Maritime struggled especially from deep, missing all seven attempts from three point range, but did out-rebound the Spartans 17-14. Castleton led by as many as 15, but Maine Maritime fought back to cut the halftime lead to 8.

 

Vanessa Powers led Castleton and all scorers with 9 points at the break, and teammate Alyssa Leonard, added 7 in the opening frame. With their lone representative from the All-Conference team, Samantha Goda out of action, the Mariners were led by Leah Jackson who scored 5 points and brought down 5 rebounds.

 

On the night, the Spartans shot 33.3% from the field, despite going just 4-24 in the second half. Maine Maritime forced 18 turnovers, but it was not enough to make the comeback.
