MMA falls short, season comes to a close

Bangor, ME – Castleton defeated Maine Maritime 55-42 to advance to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) championship game. The Spartans improve to 17-10 while the Mariners end their season at 16-10. In a repeat of last year's final, the defending champions from Castleton will take on Husson at 2:00 in Husson's Newman Gymnasium.

Maine Maritime's Maggie Smith (So., Bath, ME) got the Mariners on the board first, hitting one of two foul shots. The Spartans took their first lead of the game with a Christine Jaques (So., Burlington, VT) 3-pointer with 13:09 left in the first half, setting the score at 11-10. Jessica Stahl (Jr., Bowdoin, ME) reclaimed the Mariners' lead with a two point shot with 12:14 left in the half. Following a jumper by Laura Cary (Sr., Schaghticoke, NY), Castleton led 13-12. With 1:24 left in the first half Castleton claimed a 10 point at 25-15. The first half would end with Castleton on top at 27-15. 

At the end of the first half, Kristine Dunchus (Jr., W. Rutland, VT) and Cary led the Castleton Spartans with 6 points each. Sam Goda (So., Eliot, ME) and Stahl led the Mariners with 4 points apiece on the half.

Castleton opened the first half with a 5 point run to pull away to 15-32. Maine Maritime's Katie Pushard (Jr., Winthrop, ME) hit a jumper to make the score 17-32. With 11:39 left on the clock, Maine Maritime's Goda made a jump shot and was fouled. Goda sunk her free throw to bring the score to 27-40 with the Mariners trailing. 

Maine Maritime fought back from a 19 point deficit to trail Castleton at 42-55 with 49.7 seconds left in the game. The game ended with a Castleton victory over Maine Maritime and a final score of 55-42.

Kristie Dunchus led the Spartans with 12 points, followed by Jaques with 9 points and 4 rebounds. Sam Goda led the Mariners with 12 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 5-7 from the floor and 2-2 from the foul line. Amethyst Cousins tallied 7 points on the loss.
