Castleton takes down MMA in overtime

Box Score

Castleton, VT - Christine Jaques (Burlington, VT) knocked in a three-pointer with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, and scored eight of Castleton's 19 overtime points to lead Castleton to a 70-59 overtime win over Maine Maritime in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's basketball action Saturday evening at Glenbrook Gymnasium.

Casey McCloskey (Howland, ME) broke a 48-48 tie with 1:33 remaining in regulation, making her only basket of the game, a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to give the Mariners the 51-48 lead. After a Spartan miss, Jassmine Matos (Claremont, NH) forced a Maine Maritime turnover to give Castleton possession with 35 seconds remaining. Jaques was able to free herself at the top of the key, and sink the game-tying three-point
try.

In overtime, it was all Castleton as the Spartans raced out to a nine-point lead as Jaques sandwiched a pair of triples around one from Vanessa Powers (Marshfield, VT). Katie Hoxsie (Middlebury, VT) added five points down the stretch and Powers connected on another three to give Castleton the victory going away.

Jaques finished with a game-high 21 points on 6-for-9 shooting and 5-of-8 from distance. Hoxsie finished with 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds as Castleton improves to 9-6, 3-1 in conference play. Laura Cary (Schaghticoke, NY) chipped in 13 points off the bench, while Matos and Powers finished with nine and eight respectively.

Maggie Smith (Bath, ME) finished with 21 points and Katie Pushard added 17 on 6-for-12 shooting. Pushard also struck for five three-pointers, all in the second half. Samantha Goda (Eliot, ME) hauled in a game-high 14 rebounds for the 8-7, 3-2 Mariners.

Castleton limited the Mariners to just 22 first-half points and took a 30-22 lead into intermission. Maine Maritime answered the bell to start the second frame, going on a 17-6 run over the opening five minutes of play to grab a three-point lead at 39-36. Pushard keyed the run, jarring a pair from deep, and converting a lay-up to cap the run. Jaques quickly answered with a three-pointer of her own, and the game remained nip-and-tuck over the final nine minutes of play.

Both teams return to action this Tuesday, with the Spartans traveling to NAC foe Green Mountain College at 8:00 p.m., and the Mariners taking on intrastate rival Bowdoin at 6:00 p.m.
